As a multinational country with a high standard of living, Canada is one of the world's leading immigration destinations. If you are planning to move to Canada and become a permanent resident (PR), it is important to know that there are several official paths to immigration to Canada. Each program has its own requirements, advantages, and application requirements.
Below we provide a brief overview of some programs to help you become familiar with the main paths and programs related to immigration to Canada.
Major Immigration Programs
Express Entry
- Express Entry is the Canadian government's application system for permanent residence under the economic category (skilled-worker).
This system includes three main programs:
-
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (skilled workers)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (professional worker-occupational fields)
- Canadian Experience Class (foreigners with work and experience in Canada)
During the application process, candidates are evaluated based on their language proficiency, education, work experience, age, and other criteria (CRS — Comprehensive Ranking System). Those with the highest scores are sent an “Invitation to Apply.”.
For individuals with Express Entry status, it is possible to submit an application for permanent residence after receiving an invitation to apply.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Each Canadian province/territory can nominate foreign nationals based on their economic and labour market needs. The PNP – this nomination system allows for the possibility of obtaining permanent residence (PR).
Candidates nominated through the PNP typically gain priority in the Express Entry system with an additional 600 points, which significantly increases their chances of obtaining permanent residence.
PNPs can be in different categories, skilled workers, international graduates, entrepreneurs, etc. For example, one of the provinces, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), accepts entrepreneurs and skilled workers.
Family Sponsorship
If you or your loved ones have permanent residency or citizenship in Canada, they can apply and sponsor you. This path is aimed at preserving family ties.
Family Sponsorship is intended to bring together close family members - spouse, children, parents, etc., regardless of qualifications and experience.
Other Programs and Economic/Regional Options
- Separate opportunities (e.g. regional programs, provincial business channels, etc.) may be available for entrepreneurs and investors in Canada.
- There are also special programs and “provincial nomination” systems for certain specialty areas that require professional skills, experience, and expertise. For example, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (CLASS) is one of these types of programs.
